WBB: Hofstra Falls To Delaware In Friday Matinee

Hempstead, NY - Ana Hernandez Gil had 12 points and Boogie Brozoski added 11 points for Hofstra, but Delaware picked up a 78-59 Colonial Athletic Association victory Friday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra fell to 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the CAA with its fifth consecutive loss. Delaware snapped a three-game losing skid and upped its record to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Hernandez Gil and Brozoski were the only Pride players in double-figures with E'Lexus Davis and Caria Reynolds adding seven points each. Marianne Kalin and Brozoski tied for team-high honors in rebounds with five each.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively with the score 8-5 in favor of the Blue Hens at the midway point of the quarter. Delaware was able to maintain the advantage and led after one quarter, 17-9. The Blue Hens finished strong, connecting on six of their final eight shots and scoring the final five points of the quarter.

Delaware opened the second quarter on an 10-3 run to extend its lead to 27-12 with 6:31 to play. Brozoski and Davis had back-to-back baskets for the Pride to cut the deficit to 11, 27-16, with 5:44 to go in the quarter. That was as close as the Pride would get until Reynolds hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to go that made it a 10-point game, 37-27. Alison Lewis' free throw with three ticks on the clock gave Delaware a 38-27 lead at the half.

The teams started slowly once again in the third quarter, combining for nine points in the first 5:11 with Delaware holding a 43-31 lead. Hofstra had gotten within 10, 39-29, on a pair of Kalin free throws 1:15 into the stanza. But the Blue Hens closed the period on a 15-8 run to go up by 17, 54-37.

After falling behind by 19, 59-40, early in the fourth quarter, Hofstra tried to get back into the game and used a 12-5 run to make it 64-52 with 5:18 to play on a Reynolds jumper. Hernandez Gil's three-pointer with 3:13 to go got the Pride within 11, 68-57. But that was as close as Hofstra would come as Delaware scored 10 of the last 12 points to take the 19-point victory.

Samone DaFreese had a game-high 19 points for Delaware with Makeda Nicholas adding 12 points and Jasmine Dickey chipping in with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
