WBB: Hofstra Drops CAA Contest to Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Senior guard Boogie Brozoski and junior guard Ana Hernandez Gil combined for 36 points, but the Hofstra University Women's Basketball team fell to Towson in Colonial Athletic Association action on Sunday afternoon at the SECU arena. Hofstra drops to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in the CAA while Towson improves to 10-5 and 4-0 in the CAA.

Brozoski led the Pride with 19 points (7-of-15 FG) including a 3-of-5 effort from behind the arc. In addition to her scoring, Brozoski tied for a team-high three assists with junior forward Marianne Kalin who led Hofstra on the boards with seven. Hernandez Gil reached double figures for the ninth time this season, netting 17 points on 60 percent shooting (6-of-10) from the field and a 50 percent performance beyond the arc (3-of-6).

Kionna Jeter led three Tigers in double figures with 29 points (11-of-21 FG) with five three pointers, while Qierra Murray added 14 and Nukiya Mayo tallied 11.

It took about a minute half for either team to score, but Towson struck first with a three-pointer that ignited a 13-0 Tiger run. During the spurt, Jeter proved why she is the leading scorer in the CAA, scoring 11 of Towson's first 13 points. Brozoski got on the board for the Pride at the 5:10 mark with a three-point basket to break up the Towson run. Hofstra also got points from freshman Vanerlie Valcourt, junior Mikiyah Croskey and junior E'Lexus Davis in the first quarter, but Hofstra was held to single digits, 24-8 at the first break.

Hofstra's best effort came in the second quarter when the Pride stormed back to out-score Towson, 29-19 in the frame. In the first five minutes, Hofstra made smart shots on the court, going 7-of-9 up until the 5:16 mark. After each team exchanged a bucket, Kalin hit a jump shot at the 3:27 mark that sparked a 7-0 Hofstra run ending with a Karsten old fashioned three-point play. Brozoski added a three-pointer with under a minute remaining, as the Pride trimmed a 19-point Tiger lead to just six at the halftime break.

After two successful trips up and down the court by each team, Towson hit a three-pointer at the 8:49 mark and never looked back, as the Tigers scored 18 of the game's next 20 points to gain a 22-point edge. The teams would finish out the game scoring 19 points apiece in the fourth quarter to cement the final score.

Hofstra will continue CAA action on Friday morning at 11:30 am against Delaware on Health and Fitness Education Day at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
