Hempstead, NY – Hofstra scored a season-high four goals and extended its school record for shutouts to seven games as the Pride picked up a 4-0 Colonial Athletic Association win over William & Mary Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The seven shutouts are currently the longest streak in the nation in NCAA Division I.
The victory moved Hofstra's record to 5-3-3 on the season and 2-0-1 in the CAA. The Tribe slipped to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
Hofstra scored three times in the first half with
George O'Malley collecting what proved to be the game-winner as he corralled a header from
Sean Nealis in front of the net and got a shot past Tribe keeper Connor Andrews at the 26:13 mark.
Matthew Vowinkel then netted two consecutive goals off of long crosses to make it a 3-0 game. The first, at 33:19, off a long pass from
Marcus Lindqvist, Vowinkel banged off the left post and it ricocheted into the right corner. The second came on a set piece with
Storm Strongin serving the ball in from the left side to a diving Vowinkel, who headed it past Andrews for the 3-0 advantage at the 36:55 mark.
Luke Brown would get the final tally for the Pride as
Peter Meyer sent a ball into the box that was touch passed by Jacob Goker. Brown would finish the pass, beating reserve keeper Sam Onyeador at 54:44.
Hofstra played solid defense and limited the Tribe to 11 shots on the night, five on goal.
Alex Ashton made four saves in his seventh consecutive clean sheet.
Hofstra is back in action next Saturday at Delaware. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Notes:
-Hofstra is 5-0-2 in its last seven games.
-Vowinkel's two goals marked his first multi-goal performance of his career and gave him a team-best six on the season.
-Brown's goal was his first since returning from an injury that kept him out of the lineup for four games.
-The Pride's previous high in goals was three against Harvard and Syracuse.
-Hofstra had 16 shots in the game.
-Hofstra moved to 8-12-3 all-time versus William & Mary.
