Stony Brook, NY –
George O'Malley and
Matthew Vowinkel scored for Hofstra in the final 13 minutes as the Pride defeated Stony Brook, 2-0, in "The Long Island Rivalry", presented by The Greene Turtle, at LaValle Stadium Wednesday night.
Hofstra improved to 2-3-2 on the season, winning for the second time in as many games. Stony Brook slipped to 2-3-1.
The teams played an evenly-matched first half that ended without a score. Hofstra seemed to control play in the first 25 minutes of the stanza, outshooting the Seawolves, 4-2. But Stony Brook began to apply more pressure in the final 20 minutes, putting two of its three shots on goal.
The second half was as even as the first with Stony Brook taking three shots in the first 20 minutes compared to two for the Pride.
Peter Meyer had the Pride's best chance in the early going as his 20-yard shot was punched away by Stony Brook keeper Christian Miesch. But the Pride broke through as
Sean Nealis had a long throw in deep in Stony Brook territory that was flicked on by
Felix Smith Halle to O'Malley, who put a shot inside the far post at 76:54. Vowinkel followed nearly seven minutes later, connecting on a bicycle kick off a corner kick from
Marcus Lindqvist at 83:49.
Alex Ashton made four saves to record his third consecutive shutout. Miesch had four saves for the Seawolves.
