VB: Hofstra Routs Stony Brook In “The Long Island Rivalry”

Hempstead, NY - Led by 13 kills from freshman Aisha Skinner and 47 assists and 13 digs from junior Luisa Sydlik, the Hofstra Volleyball team continued its dominance of Long Island as the Pride swept Stony Brook, 3-0, on Tuesday evening at the David S. Mack Fitness Center.

The match, along with all of the Hofstra versus Stony Brook contests in all sports, is being billed as "The Long Island Rivalry", presented by The Greene Turtle.

Hofstra, which moved to 3-1 on the season, improved to 8-1 all-time in the series with their Long Island neighbor. The Seawolves fell to 2-2 with the loss. Set scores were 27-25, 25-20 and 25-23.

Hofstra rallied back in the first set and used a late run to capture the "extra time" two-point victory. The Pride was in control most of the second stanza and would take a two sets to none lead in the match before hitting at a .433 clip in the final set to sweep Stony Brook.

Junior Laura Masciullo had another strong match offensively for Hofstra with 12 kills on 26 attempts with just one error for a .423 attack percentage. Defensively, freshman Maddie Appleton posted 12 digs and sophomore Ivania Ortiz added 11. The Pride also got stellar matches from seniors Doris Bogoje and Michaela Rucli as each posted eight kills with no attack errors. Stony Brook was led by McKyla Brooks' 14 kills, while Leanne Sakowicz added 40 assists and Kardasia Hitchcock picked up 15 digs.

Hofstra heads to the Black Knights Invitational this weekend and will open play at the Army West Point Tournament on Friday with a 4 p.m. match against Southeastern Louisiana.

NOTES

- Skinner's 13 kills marked a new season-high.
- Sydlik now has double-doubles in all four of the Pride's matches this season.
- Appleton has picked up double figures in digs in three straight matches.
