Columbus, OH – The Hofstra Men's Soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Dayton on Friday afternoon in the Pride's season opener at the Wolstein Classic at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Hofstra (0-0-1) took a 2-0 lead, but the Flyers (0-0-1) rallied late to earn the tie.
In his first game in a Hofstra jersey, junior transfer
Peter Meyer recorded the first two shots of the Pride's season and made the second one count, putting in a failed clear in the 34th minute to give Hofstra the 1-0 lead.
After a pair of saves from senior goalkeeper
Alex Ashton early in the first half, sophomore
George O'Malley helped keep the Flyers off the board, clearing away a shot from behind Ashton.
The Pride doubled its lead in the 54th minute, with junior
Adam Savill playing a ball through to sophomore
Matthew Vowinkel, who sent it just inside the post.
Aidan Bean then scored twice in less than 12 minutes, netting the tying goal in the 87th minute to force overtime.
Ashton made another pair of saves in overtime to preserve the draw.
Hofstra takes on tournament host Ohio State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Notes:
-Ashton's seven saves were one shy of tying a career high.
-Hofstra is unbeaten in its past seven season openers dating back to 2012.
-Vowinkel led the Pride with three shots.
