Harrisonburg, VA - Third-seeded Charleston hit four home runs as the Cougars picked up a 10-3 win over Hofstra in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Charleston improved to 36-17 with the win and advanced to play No. 2 Elon Thursday. Hofstra fell to 23-22.
Luke Morgan put the Cougars up, 1-0, in the first with a two-out solo shot off the scoreboard in right center. Ari Sechopoulos added a solo shot to right with one out in the second.
Hofstra would tie the score with two runs in the fifth.
Vito Friscia and
Rob Weissheier laced back-to-back singles and moved up a base each on a sacrifice bunt from
Parker Quinn.
Vinnie Costello followed with a ground rule double that scored both runners and knot the score at two.
But the lead was short-lived as the Cougars erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the inning, scoring all with two outs. Logan McRae and Danny Wondrack had two-run home runs in the inning, while Tommy Richter had a two-run single and Dupree Hart an RBI triple to give Charleston a 9-2 lead.
Hofstra would get a run back in the sixth, but Charleston added one in the bottom of the frame to close out the scoring.
Michael James started for the Pride and went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Teddy Cillis (2-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in three innings. Costello went 2-4 with two RBIs, while Weissheier was 1-3 with an RBI.
Evan Sisk (10-3) picked up the win for Charleston, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. Justin Baker picked up his first save, going the final three innings. Morgan was 4-5 for the Cougars with three runs scored, while McRae was 3-5 with three RBIs.
Hofstra will return to action at 7 p.m. against No. 5 Delaware in an elimination game.
Notes:
-The loss by Hofstra was its first to Charleston this season as the Pride swept the Cougars during the regular season.
-Charleston turned three double plays in the game.
-Friscia extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
-The four home runs were the most allowed by Hofstra this season.
