Harrisonburg, VA - Delaware's Billy Sullivan and Coleman Vila combined on a three-hitter as Hofstra fell to the Fightin' Blue Hens, 3-1, Wednesday night at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The loss eliminated the Pride from the Championship.
Hofstra sees its season end with a 23-23 record. Delaware improved to 30-26 and advanced to face a team to be determined Thursday night at 7 p.m.
The Blue Hens used a two-out rally in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Kyle Baker singled followed by a walk to Nick Patten and a Tyler Callender hit by pitch that loaded the bases. Calvin Scott delivered a two-run single to give Delaware the lead.
Hofstra got on the board in the sixth as
Vito Friscia hit a mammoth home run to left center. It was the junior All-CAA selection's seventh round-tripper of the season.
But Sullivan, who was the CAA Co-Rookie of the Year, allowed just three hits and the one run over seven innings of work. He also stuck out 11 to improve to 7-3 on the season. Vila earned his sixth save with two innings of no-hit relief with four strikeouts.
CAA Pitcher of the Year
John Rooney (8-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over six-plus innings. Rooney struck out nine.
Chris Weiss pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit.
Baker paced the Delaware offense with three hits in four trips to the plate. He also drove in the third Delaware run.Â
Friscia had two of Hofstra's three hits, while
Matt Siedem added the third.
Notes:
-Rooney's nine strikeouts extended his school record to 108 in 2018.
-Rooney finished the year with a 1.23 ERA, setting the single season mark.
-Friscia finished the 2018 season with a career-best .353 average.
-Hofstra's 23 wins are the most since 26 in 2013.
-Hofstra made its third-ever CAA Championship appearance and is now 1-6 all-time.
