WREST: Three Hofstra Wrestlers Receive EIWA Academic Honors

Hempstead, NY – Three Hofstra University wrestlers, sophomores Jacob Martin and Vinny Vespa and red-shirt freshman Ricky Stamm, have been selected to receive an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Academic Achievement Award for 2017-18, EIWA Executive Director Greg Strobel announced Thursday.

The EIWA Academic Achievement Awards are presented to conference wrestlers who have achieved a
cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 and participated in the EIWA Championships, or achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and qualified for the NCAA Championships through the EIWA. The three Hofstra student-athletes who were honored qualified with a 3.25 GPA and above and all competed in the EIWA Championships.

Martin, a native of North Franklin, Connecticut, was the Pride's starter at 125-pounds for the second consecutive season. He recorded a 10-19 overall record including an 8-12 mark in duals and a 2-6 slate in the EIWA. Martin placed third in the Journeymen Classic last November. He currently owns a 3.81 GPA and majors in exercise science.

Vespa, a native of Monroe, New York, recorded a 10-16 record while wrestling at 133 and 141 pounds. Overall, he was 8-10 in duals and 4-3 in the EIWA. Vespa has a 3.25 grade point average and majors in physical education and health.

Stamm, a native of Levittown, New York, posted an 8-17 overall mark while wrestling at 157 and 165 pounds. Overall, he was 6-11 in duals and 2-5 in the EIWA. He placed fifth in the Journeymen Classic at 157 pounds last November. Stamm has a 3.27 grade point average and majors in history.
 
The 75 EIWA Academic Achievement Award recipients were spread out over all 16 schools in the conference.
