Hempstead, NY – Michael Morgan had three hits and Nick Stewart combined with five relievers to limit Hofstra to just six hits as James Madison defeated Hofstra, 9-3, Saturday afternoon at University Field. The win gave the Dukes a series victory over the Pride.
Hofstra, which was playing its regular season finale, is now 23-21 on the year and finishes 12-12 in Colonial Athletic Association play. James Madison, which still has one more series to play in league action, is 23-26 overall and 8-13 in the CAA.
The Dukes took advantage of a Hofstra error in the first tow score two runs. Zach Tondi had a sacrifice fly and Ryan Coale added a RBI single. JMU took control in the second, scoring four times to extend to a 6-0 lead. Morgan and Adam Sisk each had RBI singles and Josh Jones drove in a pair with a double to left center.
That was more than enough for Stewart (4-3), who allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Matt Colon, Matt Marsilli, Tucker McCoy, Daniel Goggin and Nick Robertson went the final 3 2/3, allowing an unearned run and two hits combined.
Hofstra scored a run in the second on a throwing error; in the sixth on an
Austin Gauthier single that drove in
Vito Friscia; and in the seventh on a passed ball that allowed
Tyler White to score from third.
Gauthier passed the Hofstra offense with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Rob Weissheier and Friscia collected the other Hofstra hits.
Jimmy Joyce (0-1) started for Hofstra and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits in 1 1/3 innings. Cillis followed and turned in 5 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out 10 and allowed four runs, three of them in the seventh inning.
Chris Weiss pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits with four strikeouts.
In addition to Morgan, James Madison received multiple hit games from Sisk (2), Coale (2) and DaVonn Griffin (2).
Hofstra will return to action in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, which begins May 23 at James Madison. Hofstra's seed and opponent are yet to be determined.
