Hempstead, NY -
John Rooney threw eight innings in game one and
Mikey Riesner and
Rob Weissheier each had a pair of hits as Hofstra won game one of a doubleheader, 4-1, over James Madison Friday at University Field. The Dukes prevailed in game two, 3-2.
Hofstra moved to 23-20 on the season with the split and is 12-11 in the Colonial Athletic Association. James Madison is 21-26 overall and 6-13 in league play. Hofstra's lowered its magic number to one game for a berth in the CAA Championship. A win in Saturday's regular season finale or any loss by Towson will give the Pride a spot.
Hofstra wasted no time in game one, scoring a run in the first as
Steven Foster walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and came in on Riesner's single to right. The Pride tacked on two more in the second with
Tyler White singling home
Rob Weissheier, who started the inning with a single of his own, and
Matt Siedem scoring on a wild pitch.
The Dukes got a run back in the third as DaVonn Griffin tripled and scored on a squeeze bunt from Michael Morgan. But the Pride picked up its fourth run in the fifth as Riesner and
Vito Friscia singled ahead of a run scoring double from
Rob Weissheier.

In game two the Dukes scored a ninth inning run to snap a 2-2 tie after the Pride knotted things up in the eighth. Griffin had his second triple of the day and came in on Fox Semones single up the middle.
Hofstra had tied the score at two in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from
Vinnie Costello that scored pinch runner
Devon Jeffreys.
Teddy Cillis had put Hofstra up 1-0 with a solo home run in the second, but JMU answered in the third as Griffin doubled and came in on a single from Semones. The score remained tied until the seventh when the Dukes got an RBI double from Morgan that eluded a diving Cillis.
Shelton Perkins (4-1) earned the win in relief of starter Kevin Kelly. Perkins pitched the final 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. Kelly went 7 1/3 and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out 12.
