Katie Whelan scored the game-winner with 4:06 left in the first overtime to give the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team a 15-14 victory over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
The win was Hofstra's fourth in its last five games and improves the Pride's record to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. William & Mary slipped to 4-8 and 0-1 in league action. Senior

Alexa Mattera led Hofstra with four points each as the pair both tallied hat tricks and added an assist.
It was an early deficit for Hofstra as the Tribe scored the first two goals of the game before the Pride responded with a trio of goals to lead 3-2 with 19:36 left in the opening stanza. Sophomore
Mary Kate Gerety opened the scoring for Hofstra and she was aided in the run by junior
Jenna Budd and Shapiro. Hofstra would hold a narrow 5-4 lead with less than 10 minutes left in first stanza before using a half-closing 4-0 run to open up a 9-4 lead at the break. Whelan, the hero, got the run started and it concluded with Mattera's first of the game.
The Tribe storm back quickly in the second half as they scored five goals in the first 6:05 of the half to even the score at nine following a goal from Sophie Kopec. Mattera would end the run and put Hofstra back in front and the Pride would notch three additional goals during the run from Shapiro, senior
Carlee Ancona and sophomore
Alyssa Parrella, to push the lead to 13-9 with 19:29 left in regulation. WIlliam & Mary once again answer another Pride run as they closed the half with five of the final six goals to even the game at 14 and send the contest to overtime. Hofstra's final goal of regulation came off the stick of Mattera with 9:12 remaining before Kopec and Abby Corkum scored in the final three minutes to send the contest to the extra session.
Both teams had possessions in overtime before Whelan came from behind the net for a wrap-around goal with 4:06 remaining to send the Pride home victorious.
Whelan finished with three points on two goals and an assist, while Parrella and Ancona (four caused turnovers) had the same total. Mattera added a game-best seven draw controls, while sophomore
Darcie Smith posted five draw controls and three ground balls in the game. Junior
Maddie Fields earned the win with six saves. Kopec had five goals for William & Mary with Meredith Hughes tallying four goals and Corkum notching two goals and two assists.
Hofstra returns to action next Friday when it hosts Delaware at 7 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 12-6 all-time against William & Mary and has won five straight in the series.
- The overtime game was Hofstra's first since April 17, 2016 and the Pride's first overtime win since a 10-9 victory over the Tribe on April 8, 2016.
- The four caused turnovers by Ancona marked a new career-high. She previously had three twice, most recently against Quinnipiac this season.
