Hempstead, NY - Hofstra sophomore
Alyssa Parrella posted five points on two goals and three assists for Hofstra, but it wasn't enough as Delaware pulled away in the second half for a 12-8 victory over the Pride on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The loss drops the Pride's record to 7-6 and 1-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Delaware improved to 6-8 and 1-2 in conference action.
Delaware led early on, taking a 2-0 lead almost four minutes into the game. Hofstra would get on the board at the 24:24 mark as freshman
Katie Whelan found the back of the net. That goal would start a 4-0 scoring run for the Pride as Parrella scored twice before senior
Drew Shapiro closed the run with her first of the game. The Blue Hens would take a one-goal lead into the break as they scored three times in the final ten minutes of the half to make it a 5-4 game.
With just 57 seconds expired in the second stanza, sophomore
Mary Kate Gerety knotted the game at five for Hofstra with her first goal of the contest. Delaware would answer with a pair of goals to make it 7-5 with 22:19 left in regulation. Hofstra continued to battle and a goal from Shapiro with 12:25 remaining closed the gap to one at 9-8 but Delaware got three more goals in the contest to earn the conference victory.
Shapiro and Gerety both notched two goals in the game with Shapiro adding an assist. Sophomore
Darcie Smith posted four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while sophomore
Alexa Mattera tallied three ground balls and two draw controls. Junior
Maddie Fields had eight saves for the Pride. Sydney Rausa had four points on three goals and one assist for Delaware, while Becky Gosher had three goals, four draw controls and three ground balls. Taylor Carpentier posted seven saves in net for the Blue Hens.
Hofstra is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Drexel at 1 p.m. The program will honor its eight seniors prior to the contest.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 11-20 all-time against Delaware.
- Parrella now has at least three points in six straight games. Mattera saw her team-high nine-game point scoring streak come to an end.
- Gerety tied her career-high of two goals. It marked the fourth time in her career she has notched a pair of goals in a game.
