Hempstead, NY - Sophomore
Alyssa Parrella had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist, while three other players had a pair of goals for the Pride, but the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 decision to Elon on Friday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The loss ended a three-game win streak for Hofstra, which fell to 6-5 and 0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Elon improved to 2-8 and 1-0 in the league. The contest was the CAA lid-lifter for both teams.
It was a quiet first few minutes of the game as the contest was scoreless for more than 10 minutes until sophomore
Alexa Mattera got Hofstra on the board with 19:13 showing on the clock to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage. After Elon knotted the score almost three minutes later, Hofstra would get a free-position goal from senior
Drew Shapiro to make it 2-1 with 10:24 left before intermission. The Phoenix would take control in the opening stanza, though, as they scored four straight goals to lead 5-2 with six minutes left.
Elon would push its lead to four goals, 7-3, as Maeve Cowley scored 5:30 into the second stanza. Hofstra would then begin to mount a rally as Parrella and Mattera scored back-to-back goals to close the deficit to 7-5 with 19:32 left in regulation. After Stephanie Asher made it an 8-5 game 32 seconds later, the Pride would get even closer as Parrella and senior
Carlee Ancona scored roughly three minutes apart as Hofstra got within 8-7 with 14:34 left to play. That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as Elon ended any thoughts of a Hofstra comeback with three straight goals en route to the four-goal victory.
Junior
Maddie Fields made 11 saves and added three ground balls for Hofstra, which also got five draw controls and two goals from Mattera. Shapiro and Ancona joined Parrella and Mattera with two goals for the Pride and freshman
Shannon Boyle had two caused turnovers. Asher had five points on two goals and three assists for Elon. Kira Oberle had three ground balls and Leah Zadjura posted two caused turnovers for the Phoenix.
Hofstra is back in action on Sunday when it travels to William & Mary for a 1 p.m. contest.
