Williamsburg, VA -
Rob Weissheier hit a first inning grand slam to back the pitching of his brother,
Matt Weissheier, as Hofstra posted a 7-3 victory over William & Mary Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The win was Hofstra's sixth in a row, 20th of the season and clinched the series win over the Tribe.
The Pride is now 20-15 overall and 9-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play. William & Mary is 15-28 overall and 3-14 in the CAA.
Hofstra would get all it would need in the first inning as the Pride loaded the bases on two hit batters and a single before
Rob Weissheier deposited a Wade Strain pitch over the left field fence for the 4-0 lead.
The Tribe got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Hall singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Three batters later, Colin Lipke knocked in the run with a double.
But Hofstra regained the four-run advantage in the second as
Daniel Page walked and later came in on a single from
Mikey Riesner. The Pride added to it in the seventh when
Steven Foster, who earlier in the game recorded his 200th career hit, ripped a two-run home run off Michael Goldak.
William & Mary did score a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-run homer from Brandon Raquet.
Matt Weissheier (4-4) picked up the win after allowing a run on five hits over six innings. He also had five strikeouts. After relief appearances from
Michael James and
Andrew Mundy,
Chris Weiss got the final five outs with three coming via strikeout.
Hofstra will look for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Â Â
