Williamsburg, VA - In what has become a Friday ritual, Hofstra University junior pitcher
John Rooney turned in a stellar outing as the Pride defeated William & Mary, 1-0, at Plumeri Park. Rooney had a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings and settled for a three-hit, complete game shutout with five strikeouts.
Hofstra won for the fifth consecutive game, improving to 19-15 overall and 8-8 in the CAA. William & Mary dropped to 15-27 overall and 3-13 in league play.
Steven Foster drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Daniel Page started the inning by drawing a one-out walk and stole second.
Tyler White reached on a throwing error, allowing Page to go to third. Foster followed with a fly ball to deep center that allowed Page to score.
That would be all Rooney (7-0) would need as he did not allow a base runner until a hit batsman in the sixth. He promptly picked the runner off, his 12th pickoff of the season. But Patrick Ryan then delivered the Tribe's first hit of the night, a single to right, that fell in front of
Teddy Cillis. William & Mary threatened in the eighth inning, putting runners on first and second on a pair of singles. But Rooney showed he could field his position as well, starting a 1-4-3 double play to get out of the inning. The Tribe had one last gasp in the ninth as Rooney issued his only walk of the game. But, once again, he came through with a pickoff (his 13th of the year) to get the tying run off base.
Bodie Sheehan (2-6) was the hard-luck loser for the Tribe, allowing five hits and an unearned run over seven innings.Â
The teams continue the series Saturday at 4 p.m.
