Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the College of Charleston Sunday afternoon in dramatic fashion as
Rob Weissheier's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth capped a four-run rally in a 5-4 victory. The blast, Weissheier's third of the season, gave pitcher
Teddy Cillis his first win of the season and his first in nearly two years.
Hofstra improved to 17-15 overall and 7-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win. Charleston fell to 27-14 on the year and 9-6 in the CAA with its fifth consecutive loss.
The Cougars broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth as Dupree Hart walked, went to third on a single that glanced off Cillis' glove and changed directions and came in on Danny Wondrack's infield single to third. Charleston would tack on two more runs in the eighth on Bradley Dixon's two-run double to make it a 4-1 game.
After Charleston closer Nathan Ocker, who entered the game with a 0.86 ERA and a 22-inning scoreless streak, recorded the first out of the ninth,
Mikey Riesner doubled inside the first base bag to get things started. Ocker then hit
Vito Friscia to put runners on first and second for Cillis. The senior helped his own cause with a single to center that drove in Riesner and made it a 4-2 game. Ocker got another strikeout for the second out in the inning, which brought up Weissheier. The sophomore took a 2-1 offering and hit a no doubt home run over the fence in left field for the win.
Ocker (2-2) took the loss in relief of starter Jakob Frishmuth, who allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings of work. Ocker allowed four runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Cillis (1-3) came out of the bullpen and went six innings. He allowed five hits, three runs and struck out six to win for the first time in 16 decisions.
Michael James, one of Hofstra's top relievers, started the game for Hofstra and was stellar in his first start of the season as he allowed one run on three hits over three innings.
Hofstra will be back in action Tuesday evening when it travels to Wappingers Falls, New York for a 5 p.m. game against Manhattan at Dutchess Stadium.
