Jimmy Yanes and sophomore
Ryan Tierney each recorded hat-tricks as the Pride recorded a 16-8 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Drexel Dragons at Vidas Field Saturday afternoon. The two teams also were playing for the HEADstrong Foundation's Hero Bowl that will return to a new home for the fifth consecutive year.
Hofstra is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the CAA heading into their season finale at top-seed UMass next Friday. A berth in the CAA Championship Tournament will be on the line. Drexel fell to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Moeser recorded career-highs of three goals and five points while also equalizing his career-best of two assists in the contest. Yanes also equaled his career-high with three goals and added an assist while Tierney, who came out of the sick bed to start, posted his fifth hat-trick of the year. Senior
Dylan Alderman recorded four points on two goals and two assists. Seniors
Brendan Kavanagh and
Trevor Kupecky and sophomore
Kyle Gallagher also posted goals while newcomers
Dylan McIntosh and
Keegan Santos also tallied solo goals. It was Santos' first of his young college career. Senior
Jack Concannon recorded eight saves in the Pride victory to post his sixth win of the season.
Drexel was led by Matt Varian with four goals and two assists while Reid Bowering also added four goals. Dragon goalie Chre Teitelbaum made 11 saves in the Drexel cage in the losing effort.
Hofstra came out of the game fast Saturday, scoring the first four goals with Moeser getting three and Gallagher getting one to build a 4-0 lead early in the second. Bowering put the Dragons on the board with 8:52 to play in the half but the Pride responded with three more goals, by Yanes and two by Alderman, before halftime for a 7-1 lead at the break.
The Pride would add five goals in the third including two more by Yanes, and then add four in the fourth including two by Tierney to complete the hat-trick and Santos' first career goal to close out the scoring. Hofstra outshot the Dragons, 40-25 and picked up 25 ground balls to Drexel's 18.
Hofstra returns to action for its final regular season next Friday, April 27 when the Pride travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to face the Minutemen of the University of Massachusetts at Garber Field. Game time is 5 p.m.
