WLAX: Stirring Comeback Leads Hofstra Past Drexel

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Alyssa Parrella had five points (4G, 1A) and fellow sophomore Alexa Mattera matched her with four goals to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to thrilling comeback win, 13-11, over Drexel on Sunday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Pride trailed the Dragons, 7-1, with 9:18 left in the first half before mounting the rally.

Hofstra improved to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win. The Pride has now won at least eight games in five of the last six seasons. Drexel falls to 3-10 and 0-3 in conference action with the loss. Parrella keyed the rally at the draw circle as she had five draw controls to lead the way.

It was all Drexel in the first half as the Dragons jumped out to that 7-1 lead as Karson Harris scored three of Drexel's first six goals and a goal from Alex Beilman with make it 7-1 with less than 10 minutes left in the opening stanza. Mattera would end the early Drexel run as she scored a minute later to close the gap to five. An unassisted tally from senior Drew Shapiro made in a three-goal contest at 7-4 but the Dragons took a four-goal lead into the break as Harris scored with just over a minute remaining before the break.

Everything changed to start the second half for Hofstra as Parrella opened the second stanza scoring with a free-position goal with 26:31 showing on the clock. It would be the start of a 7-0 scoring run for the Pride, and a 10-1 scoring run spanning the two halves, that made it an 11-8 Hofstra lead with 14:08 left in regulation. Parrella and Mattera were the stars during the run as Parrella posted three goals during the 7-0 spurt and Mattera added a pair. Drexel rallied and closed the gap to 11-10 with a little more than seven minutes left, but back-to-back goals from freshman Katie Whelan and Parrella cemented the comeback and allowed Hofstra to earn the thrilling win.

Shapiro had two goals on her "Senior Day", while fellow seniors Carlee Ancona had two ground balls and a caused turnover and Amanda Seekamp tallied a ground ball. Parrella added three ground balls, while sophomore Darcie Smith tallied three ground balls and two draw controls. Whelan posted two goals and three draw controls, while junior Maddie Fields had seven saves in net and added a trio of ground balls. Harris finished with five points on four goals and one assist for Drexel, while Maggie Stetson added three goals and four draw controls. Zoe Bennett had 14 saves for the Dragons.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, April 20 when it travels to nationally-ranked Towson for a 6 p.m. contest.
