BB: Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Towson Over Hofstra

Towson, MD - Richie Palacios hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Towson a 5-3 victory over Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. The Tigers entered the inning down, 3-0, before storming back to even the Colonial Athletic Association series at one game apiece.

Hofstra slipped to 12-7 on the season, 2-3 in the CAA while the Tigers moved to 5-19 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Hofstra scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Parker Quinn drove in the first run with a single, while Vito Friscia belted his fourth home run of the season in the fifth. Hofstra loaded the bases in the eighth on a single and two walks before Daniel Page drew another walk to force in the third run.

Hofstra closer Chris Weiss, who came on in relief in the seventh, was cruising until the ninth but still had a chance to escape unscathed. The Tigers put the first two runners on base with a walk and a single, but Weiss struck out the next two batters. But Dirk Masters singled home the first run and pit runners on the corners. A walk to Billy Lenox loaded the bases for Palacios, Towson's top hitter. The junior, who was 0-4 up until that point, took a 1-2 pitch from Weiss (2-2) over the right field fence to send the Tigers home with the victory.

Matt Weissheier started for Hofstra and was great, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings. Brad Camarda followed with 2/3 of an inning before Weiss came on for the remainder.

Bo Plagge (1-1) earned the win in relief after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. David Marriggi started and allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
