Towson, MD - Hofstra scored seven runs in the fifth inning to extend to an 8-0 lead, which was more than enough for starter
John Rooney in an 11-0 win over Towson Friday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. Rooney limited the Tigers to two hits over seven innings and struck out nine batters.

The Pride improved to 12-6 on the season and evened their Colonial Athletic Association mark at 2-2. Towson fell to 4-19 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Hofstra opened the scoring in the fourth when
Austin Gauthier led off with a walk. With two outs he moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielding error. Hofstra broke the game open in the fifth as
Vinnie Costello walked and
Daniel Page singled to start the inning. After a balk,
Matt Siedem delivered a two-run double for 3-0 lead. Siedem would score on a
Steven Foster double and later drive in the Pride's seventh run of the inning with a bases loaded walk.
Teddy Cillis had a solo home run in the inning as well and the Pride scored two other runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

The Pride would add a run in the sixth on a bases loaded walk and two more in the eighth on a
Daniel Page double.

Rooney (4-0) allowed just two singles and walked two batters in his stint.
Seamus Brazill pitched the final two innings and allowed a pair of singles.

Gavin Weyman (0-6), the first of six Towson pitchers, took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits over four innings of work. Andrew Cassard had two of Towson's four hits.

The teams will play game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.

-The shutout was Hofstra's fourth of the season, matching the school record set in 2012.
-Hofstra's seven-run fifth was their highest-scoring inning of the season.
-Rooney lowered his ERA to 1.57
-The margin of victory was Hofstra's largest in a CAA game since a 16-1 win over Delaware on April 27, 2012.
-Eight of Hofstra's nine starters scored at least one run.
