Vito Friscia capped off a late-game Hofstra rally with a solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning of game one as the Pride split a doubleheader with Albany at University Field Saturday afternoon. Hofstra trailed 7-1 after the top of the seventh inning and 8-7 going into the bottom of the ninth before prevailing, 9-8. Albany took game two, 4-1, snapping Hofstra's nine-game winning streak.
The Great Danes (6-5) scored an unearned run in the first inning of game one as leadoff batter Nick Kondo reached on an error and came around on a sun and wind-aided triple. Albany tacked on four more runs in the sixth, capitalizing on three hits and a Hofstra error. Hofstra would get a run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and, after Albany scored twice more in the seventh, tack on four more in the bottom of the frame trail 7-5.
Austin Gauthier had t big two-run double and Friscia added a two-run single.
Hofstra (9-3) would tie the game at 7 on a pair of RBI singles from
Justin Smith and Gauthier. But Albany struck quickly in the ninth as Connor Powers hit a leadoff pinch-hit home run to give the Great Danes an 8-7 advantage. The Pride once again came through in their half of the inning as Smith delivered a two-out single that scored
Rob Weissheier with the tying run. Friscia then ended things with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 10th, his third home run of the season.
Chris Weiss (2-1) got the win in relief, allowing a run in two innings of work. J.T. Genovese (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.
In game two, Albany starter Dominic Savino (2-0) struck out 15 batters over seven innings and Patrick Lagravinese had two hits and two RBIs in the Great Danes 4-1 win. Savino allowed just four hits on the day.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the second as
Daniel Page singled to drive home Smith. Albany scored three unearned runs in the fifth off of Hofstra starter
Matt Weissheier (1-2), who took the hard-luck loss. Lagravinese had a two-run single in the frame that that snapped a 1-1 tie.
The teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 12 p.m.
