BB: Hofstra Throws No-Hitter, Wins Two At UMBC Tournament

Baltimore, MD – John Rooney and Seamus Brazill combined on a no-hitter in the opening game against Mount St. Mary's and the Pride offense erupted for 11 runs and 13 hits in an 11-0 win. Hofstra's bats stayed hot in the second game of the day, racking up 14 hits and nine runs in a 9-6 win over host UMBC. Both games were part of the UMBC Tournament at the Retrievers' Alumni Field.

The no-hitter was Hofstra's second this season following Brazill's solo effort at Lamar on February 24.

Hofstra (7-2) extended its win streak to seven games with the pair of victories. Mount St. Mary's fell to 3-7 overall and UMBC is 2-8.

Rooney (2-0) went six innings and struck out eight to go along with four walks. Brazill pitched three perfect frames to record his first save.

The Pride got all it would need in the second as Mikey Riesner delivered an RBI double that scored Teddy Cillis. However, the offense did not stop there as Hofstra would add six runs on the fifth on a two-run single from Vito Friscia, a three-run home run from Cillis and a solo blast from Rob Weissheier. Daniel Page added a two-run shot in the seventh, while Cillis (sac fly) and Riesner (single) drove in runs in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Michael Collins (1-2) took the loss for the Mountaineers, allowing five runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

In the second game Hofstra jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and a 9-0 lead after four frames before allowing six runs to the Retrievers in the fifth. But the Pride bullpen was solid, allowing just one hit over the final five innings to preserve the victory.

Friscia had a two-run home run in the first inning, and Austin Gauthier added a three-run shot in the second to go along with Steven Foster's RBI single. In the Pride's three-run fourth, Riesner had a two-run single and Rob Weissheier added an RBI single.

Matt Weissheier started and did not allow a hit for the first three innings. UMBC chased him in the fifth, scoring six runs before an out was recorded. Zach Altieri (2-0) came on and went two scoreless innings. Michael James followed with one before Chris Weiss closed out the final two innings for his second save.

Colin Stack had a three-run home run for UMBC and Christian Torres added a two-run double. Matt Chanin (0-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in two innings of work.

Hofstra and UMBC will meet again Sunday at 12 p.m.

-Gauthier's home run was the first of his collegiate career.
-Page's home run was his first at Hofstra after six at the College of San Mateo
