Elon, NC - Sophomore
Eli Pemberton tallied a game-high 27 points, while senior
Rokas Gustys pulled down a game-best 20 rebounds to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a important 67-48 road win over Elon on Thursday evening at Alumni Gym. It marked the 10th time in Gustys' illustrious career he has tallied at least 20 rebounds in a game. Â
Hofstra improves to 15-10 and 8-5 in the league with the win, while Elon drops to 14-12 and 6-7 in Colonial Athletic Association action.Â
A low-scoring first half would see the Phoenix lead 28-24 at the break as both teams struggled to get any offense flowing. Hofstra led 4-2 almost five minutes in before Elon used a 7-0 scoring run to make it 9-4 with 12:18 left. The Phoenix would take as much as a seven-point lead in the opening stanza before settling in for the four-point lead as Pemberton was electric in the first half with 17 points for the Pride.Â
Elon made it a seven-point game to start the second stanza before Hofstra began to mount a rally. The Pride would use a 9-2 run to tie the game at 33 on a three-pointer from junior
Justin Wright-Foreman with 16:23 left in regulation. With the score 35-33 in favor of the Phoenix, Hofstra scored 10 straight points to take its largest lead of the game to that point at 43-35 with 12:35 remaining after a steal and dunk from sophomore
Stafford Trueheart.Â
Leading by five, 47-42, with just under 10 minutes left in the second half, Hofstra would take a commanding 59-44 lead as the Pride used a 12-2 run to open up the large advantage. The run ended with nine straight from the Pride, including four from Wright-Foreman. That would be enough breathing room for the Pride as they went on to capture the dominating 19-point victory.Â
Wright-Foreman finished with 21 points for the Pride, while Gustys added six points and Trueheart chipped in with six rebounds and three points. Tyler Seibring led Elon with 16 points and eight rebounds.Â
Hofstra continues its southern road trip when it travels to Wilmington, North Carolina for a game at UNCW on Saturday at 7 p.m.
