WBB: Hofstra Falls To UNCW On Fourth-Quarter Rally

Hempstead, NY – Four Hofstra players scored in double figures but UNCW senior guard Madison Raque scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Seahawks to a 59-55 come-from-behind Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which dropped its fourth consecutive contest, fell to 10-12 overall and 4-7 in the CAA. The Seahawks, who snapped a ten-game losing skid, improved to 8-14 overall and 1-10 in conference play.

Hofstra was led by junior Boogie Brozoski with 16 points, senior Aleana Leon with 14 points and sophomores E'Lexus Davis and Mikiyah Croskey with 10 each. Croskey also grabbed 10 rebounds while sophomore Marianne Kalin grabbed a game-high 12 caroms.

The Seahawks, who overcame a 14-point deficit in the second quarter for the victory, were led by Raque, who tallied seven of her 15 points in the fourth quarter from the charity stripe. UNCW did not score a field goal in the last 8:03 and was three-for-11 in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks also got 15 points from sophomore Lacey Suggs

The Pride came out of the gate fast scoring the first six points of the contest with Leon accounting for four of them. UNCW closed to within three times in the first, the latest at 12-11 on a Banks layup with 3:32 to play in the first. But the Pride, who shot 67 percent (10-15) from the field in the first 10 minutes, closed out the quarter on a 9-5 run to take a 21-16 lead.

Hofstra opened the second quarter on fire as well, scoring 11 of the first 13 points to open up a 32-18 lead at the 6:43 mark after two Brozoski free throws. Brozoski had seven of the Pride's 11 points. But the Seahawks responded with a 9-0 run as part of an 11-2 spurt to end the half to close to within five at 34-29 at the break. Suggs and senior Jenny DeGraaf each had four in the final run for UNCW.

The two teams split the 24 points in the third quarter but it was the Pride, who once again, got the quick start in the period. Hofstra opened with an 8-2 run over the first 1:51 to boost their lead to 42-31 on Olivia Askin's three-pointer. But UNCW outscored the Pride, 10-4 the rest of the quarter to once again trail by five at 46-41 after three quarters.

The Seahawks turned the tide in the fourth quarter, scoring the first eight points in the period to take their first lead in the contest, as part of a 10-2 run over the first 4:42 to take a 51-48 lead on Raque's two free throws. Hofstra responded with five unanswered points, with Leon posting the final three, to regain the lead at 53-51 with 3:06 to play. UNCW tied the game on two free throws by Raque off double technical fouls on the Pride at the 2:45 mark. Suggs then hit one of two free throws and Raque added two more from the line for a 56-53 lead with 42 seconds to play.

Davis followed with a layup for Hofstra with 0:26 to play before sophomore Moriah Crisp sealed the contest with two more free throws with 0:18 remaining to boost the lead to 58-55. Davis missed a three-point attempt with 13 seconds to play which would have tied the game at 58-all and Raque added the nail in the coffin with a free throw two seconds later.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, February 9 when the Pride travel to Maryland to face the Tigers of Towson at 7 p.m.
