Staten Island, NY - Sophomore
Alexa Mattera tallied a career-high six points on a career-best five goals, while senior
Carlee Ancona added a career-high four goals to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a 15-10 win over Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at Hameline Field.
The win moves the Pride to 2-0 on the young season, while the Seahawks fall to 0-2 in 2018. Sophomore
Alyssa Parrella tied Mattera for game-high honors with six points on four goals and two assists. She also added a game-high five draw controls.
Wagner got on the board first in the game just 1:50 into the contest before Hofstra scored seven straight goals to open up a commanding 7-1 advantage with 13:38 left before intermission following an unassisted tally from Parrella. The Pride had four different goal scorers during the run with Parrella (2), Ancona (2) and Mattera (2) all getting multiple goals during the run. The Seahawks closed the gap to four at the break, though, as the home squad scored three of the final four goals in the opening stanza.
With Hofstra ahead 10-5 with just over 25 minutes left in regulation after another Mattera goal, the Seahawks scored three straight goals to close to within 10-8 following a free-position goal from Erin Kerstetter with 15:16 to play. That would be as close as Wagner would get, though, as the Pride scored five of the final seven goals in the game to earn the victory.
Senior
Drew Shapiro and Mattera led Hofstra with three ground balls, while Mattera and senior
Amanda Seekamp posted two caused turnovers each to lead the Pride. Kerstetter had three goals to lead Wagner, while Ally Alliegro had four draw controls, two assists and a goal for the Seahawks.
