WLAX: Hofstra Drops Overtime Heartbreaker

Hempstead, NY - Fairfield's Brenna Connolly scored with 41 seconds left in the first overtime to lift the Stags to a 13-12 victory over Hofstra Saturday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium. Fairfield had forced the extra session with a Jillian Winwood goal as time expired.

The loss, Hofstra's first of the season after two wins, dampened a stellar performance from Alyssa Parrella. The Pride sophomore tallied six goals and an assist and her last goal of the game, with 1:23 left in regulation, had given Hofstra a 12-11 lead.

Fairfield held an 8-6 advantage at the half, coming back from a 4-0 deficit. Parrella (twice), Jenna Budd and Katie Whelan each scored for the Pride in the opening eight minutes of play. But Fairfield would eventually tie the score at six on the first of Olivia Russell's three goals with 6:38 to go in the half. Russell would score two more times before time expired to give the Stags the two goal lead.

The teams exchanged goals to start the second half before the Pride went on a three-goal run with two from Parrella and the third from Drew Shapiro that gave the Pride an 11-10 lead with 7:54 to play. Connolly tied the score back up at 11 with a free position goal with 3:06 to go before Parrella knotted the score with 1:23 to go. After winning the ensuing draw, Hofstra went on the advantage following a yellow card. But the Pride turned the ball over twice with the extra player and Fairfield called timeout with 12 seconds to go. When play resumed, Jillian Winwood was fouled with three seconds to go and converted the free position shot with no time on the clock and send the game to overtime.

Hofstra goalkeeper Maddie Fields made two saves in the extra session, but could not stop Connolly on the free position shot. The Pride netminder finished with five saves on the day and added four ground balls. Shapiro and Budd each had two goals on the day, while Carlee Ancona and Whelan tallied one each. Parrella added six draw controls and five ground balls to her six goals.

Connolly and Winwood each had four goals to lead the Stags. Erin Mammele posted 11 draw controls on the night and keeper Paulina DiFatta posted 18 saves.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday at Maryland. Game time is set for 12 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is now 11-4 all-time versus Fairfield.
-Parrella has 13 goals in her last two meetings with the Stags after scoring a career-best seven last season.
-Budd's two goals are a career-high.
