WLAX: Hofstra Rolls In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Alyssa Parrella had five points on four goals and one assist, while adding a career-high tying nine draw controls as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team opened the 2018 season with a dominating 13-1 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Sophomore Alexa Mattera also had a strong game with four goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Pride.

Hofstra improves to 1-0, while Bucknell suffers its first loss of the season and moves to 1-1 this year.

The Pride scored four times in the first five minutes of the game to get off on the right track as Parrella notched a pair and was joined in the scoring column by Mattera and freshman Shannon Boyle. Hofstra would lead 10-0 at halftime to continue the rout with five different goal scorers finding the back of the net in the opening stanza.

In total, Hofstra would score the first 13 goals of the contest with senior Drew Shapiro, junior Jenna Budd and Mattera adding to the tally in the second half. Bucknell would end any thoughts of a Hofstra shutout as Lillie Hunt scored with just over eight minutes left.

Freshman Katie Whelan added four draw controls for the Pride, while Boyle chipped in with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Seekamp added a trio of ground balls to her total. Junior Maddie Fields earned the win for Hofstra with four saves in just over 55 minutes in net.

Hofstra has a quick turnaround as the Pride will travel to Wagner on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.
