Columbus, OH - Hofstra rallied from a 5-0 first quarter deficit to get within one goal at 7-6, before the sixth-ranked Buckeyes tallied two of the final three scores as the Pride dropped a 9-7 decision Saturday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Hofstra fell to 0-1 on the season while the Buckeyes improved to 3-0.
Hofstra got three goals in the game from
Jimmy Yanes, while
Ryan Tierney added two goals and an assist.
Alex Moeser posted two assists in the game for the Pride as well.
Jack Concannon made nine saves in goal.
The Buckeyes scored the first five goals of the game with Leclair netting two and adding two assists. Leclaire put Ohio State on the board 1:40 into the game with an unassisted tally. Ryan Terefenko followed with an unassisted goal of his own at the 7:08 mark. Leclaire scored an extra-man goal from Gale Thorpe at 9:12 and then assisted on Colin Chell's goal 12 seconds later. Thorpe closed out the quarter scoring with a goal off a feed from Leclaire with 3:30 remaining.
Hofstra got on the board in the second quarter as Yanes netted the first Pride goal of the season at the 6:33 mark. Tierney found the back of the net 1:25 later to make it a three-goal deficit. But Thorpe scored his second of the game at 11:15 to make it 6-2. Hofstra then made the most of an extra-man opportunity with
Dylan McIntosh collecting his first career goal from Tierney with 43 seconds remaining. Â
The Pride outscored the Buckeyes, 2-1, in the third quarter with Yanes notching both Hofstra goals. His second of the game came at the 11:05 mark, while his third tally came on a run from the back of the cage and made the score 7-5 with 2:46 remaining in the quarter. The Pride thwarted a two-man advantage for the Buckeyes late in the quarter as Concannon came up with a point blank save.
Hofstra started the fourth quarter on a man-up and
Brendan Kavanagh made it a one goal game 23 seconds in off a feed from Moeser. But the Buckeyes pushed the lead back to three with back-to-back goals from John Kelly and Chell. Tierney closed out the scoring from Moeser with 49 second remaining.
Leclair, Thorpe and Chell each scored twice for the Buckeyes. Leclaire also had two assists. Matthew Smidt made 12 saves in the cage for Ohio State.
