Hempstead, NY – Three Hofstra wrestlers recorded 2-0 records on the day as the Pride split two matches in a tripleheader at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday afternoon. Hofstra (1-2) defeated VMI (2-6), 28-15 in the day's finale after Northern Colorado (2-2) won the first two matches on the day, defeating VMI, 35-9 in the opener and Hofstra, 21-13 in the middle match.
Hofstra freshman
Dylan Ryder was 2-0 at 125, posting a 13-3 major decision over Northern Colorado's 12
th-ranked Rico Montoya and a 15-0 tech fall over VMI's Cliff Conway to improve to 10-8 on the season. Pride red-shirt sophomore
Garrett Lambert (4-7) also was 2-0 with a 9-5 decision over Northern Colorado's Owen Lamb at 141 and an 11-0 major decision over VMI's Zach Schmitt at 149. Classmate
Chris Mauriello (3-4) was the third Pride grappler who recorded a 2-0 mark on the day with an 8-7 decision over Northern Colorado's Jordan Robison at 157 and a 17-2 tech fall over VMI's Jerrod Hunziker in the nightcap.
In Hofstra's first match against Northern Colorado, the Pride led 13-12 after junior
Sage Heller's 5-0 win over Trenton Schultz at 174 pounds. It was Hofstra's fourth win of the match. But, unfortunately for the Pride, it was their last win of the contest as the Bears of UNC posted three decisions to close out the contest and post the 21-13 victory.
In the Pride's second match against VMI, Hofstra trailed 9-5 after three matches. But Lambert started three consecutive bonus point victories that turned the deficit into a 19-9 lead after consecutive tech falls by Mauriello at 157 and red-shirt sophomore
Ricky Stamm at 165. After the Keydets recorded a pin at 174 to close the gap to 19-15, the Pride closed out the match with three consecutive wins by decision to record the 28-15 win.
Hofstra will break for the end of semester examinations and Christmas holidays before returning to action on Friday, January 4 at Bloomsburg University at 6 p.m.
