WBB: Fourth Quarter Burst Pushes Hofstra Past UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hofstra University Women's Basketball team outscored the UMBC Retrievers, 18-8 in the fourth quarter, as the Pride captured a 45-42 victory at the UMBC Event Center on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Hofstra improves to 4-6 overall while UMBC falls to 6-5 on the season.

Just one Pride player finished in double figures, as senior Boogie Brozoski netted 10 points, eight of which occurred in the final 10 minutes of action. Behind Brozoski was junior Marianne Kalin and freshman Vanerlie Valcourt who tallied eight points each, as Valcourt shot 4-of-9 from the floor to help her to a season-high total. Hofstra saw three other players net five points each, including junior E'Lexus Davis, senior Sica Cuzic and junior Petja Krupenko. On the glass, Kalin led all players with a career-high 13 rebounds.

In a defensive battle, each team struggled to find the bottom of the net for a majority of the contest as neither team shot above 31 percent on the day. At the end of the first quarter, Hofstra led by a score of 10-8, but UMBC responded with a 14-12 second quarter to knot things evenly at the half.

Hofstra was ice cold from the floor in the third quarter, as the Pride put itself at a 34-27 deficit heading into the final stanza. Hofstra went on a 6-0 run to begin the quarter and level the score, 36 all, with 6:31 left in the game. UMBC stopped the run with a three-point basket, but Hofstra continued to apply the pressure with nine-straight points to outscore the Retrievers, 15-3 up until the 1:37 mark, as the Retrievers sunk a three-point bucket to cut the score to just three points with a minute and a half remaining. Hofstra held UMBC without a shot up until the final second, as the Retrievers missed a three-pointer which would have tied the game. UMBC corralled the offensive rebound, but was only able to shoot a two-point basket which missed as time expired.

The Pride will enjoy an extended break before getting back to action on Friday, December 21 at Siena for the final road game of 2018. Tip off against the Saints at the Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville, N.Y. is slated for 7:00 pm.
