LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Hofstra University Women's Basketball team led wire-to-wire, emerging victorious against the Siena Saints, 57-50 at the Alumni Recreation Center on Friday evening.
Hofstra improves its record to 5-6 overall, while Siena falls to 4-7 on the season.
Leading the Pride in scoring for the fifth time this season was senior guard
Boogie Brozoski, who netted 20 points on 57 percent shooting, good for her third 20+ point total of the season. Junior guard
Ana Hernandez Gil followed Brozoski with 11 points, her sixth double figure game of the season. In addition to her scoring, Hernandez Gil had a career-night all over the rest of the floor, posting career-highs with six assists, five rebounds, and two blocks. Junior
Mikiyah Croskey played solid minutes for the Pride off the bench, going 4-of-4 from the floor for a season-high eight points. On the glass, Siena out-rebounded Hofstra, 38-31, however the Pride got a team-high eight rebounds from senior guard
Sica Cuzic and seven from sophomore
Jaylen Hines.
Siena's Maddie Sims led the Saints with a double double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds on the night.
The initial quarter made all the difference for Hofstra, as Siena out-scored the Pride in every other frame but the first. Hofstra stormed on to the court, going on an 8-0 run while holding Siena to 0-of-7 shooting from the floor during the first four minutes of action. The Pride finished the first period shooting 50 percent (8-of-16 FG), while the defense shined on the opposite end, holding Siena to just 2-of-14 from the field in the first 10 minutes. Brozoski increased the Pride lead to 11, knocking down a fade-away jump shot at the buzzer to reach double figures by the first break.
Hofstra reached its largest lead of the contest (16 points) just under two minutes into the second period, as Cuzic got on to the scoreboard with a layup before Hernandez Gil sunk a three-point basket off of a pass by Brozoski. A 10-1 run by the Saints cut the Hofstra lead to just seven points, but the Pride was able to hold on to a nine-point advantage at halftime, 26-17.
After a 13-12 third quarter in favor of the Saints, Hofstra entered the final stanza leading by eight tallies. Siena scored five of the game's next seven points, but junior guard
Petja Krupenko corralled a pass from Croskey for a three-point basket to keep the Saints at bay at the 7:52 mark. A 9-3 spurt by Siena that lasted just over five minutes made it a two-point game, before each team exchanged a three-pointer to keep things within one possession with 1:57 on the clock. Brozoski drilled a crucial three-pointer to increase the Pride lead to five with 1:26 remaining, but the Saints were never able to get closer than four points as Hofstra ran away with the 57-50 road victory.
Hofstra is set to close out the calendar year at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex against Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday, December 29. Tip off against the Wildcats is slated for 1:00 pm.
