Justin Wright-Foreman scored a game-high 24 points to lead four Pride players in double-figures and
Tareq Coburn had a career-best 19 points as Hofstra pulled away from Rider late in the game for an 89-73 victory at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Saturday afternoon. The Pride used a game-ending 11-0 run over the final 2:46 to break open a close game.
Hofstra, which won for the fourth consecutive game, improved to 7-3 on the season. Rider slipped to 2-3 with its second straight loss. The win was also Hofstra's ninth straight home win, which ranks as the second-longest in the Pride's Colonial Athletic Association era (since 2001).
Desure Buie had 14 points and six assists while
Eli Pemberton chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Pride. Wright-Foreman also had six assists for the Pride while Coburn grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Hofstra held a 44-39 lead at the half following an opening 20 minutes that saw six tie scores and four lead changes. After a back-and-fourth opening few minutes, Rider used a 7-2 run to take a 17-11 lead with 13:47 on the clock following a Tyree Marshall layup. Hofstra got within one on three occasions, the last at 28-27 on a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman with 7:20 remaining in the half. Hofstra would finally grab its first lead since 2-0 on a pair of free throws from Pemberton with 7:07 to go that made it a 29-28 game. Two more from the stripe for Pemberton extended the Pride's lead to 31-28 but Rider went on a 5-0 run to go back up, 33-31. Coburn scored three straight points for Hofstra to give the Pride a 34-33 advantage with 4:00 to go. Hofstra would outscore Rider, 10-6 the rest of the way including a buzzer beating three-pointer from
Jalen Ray.
Rider came out in the second half and scored six straight points to go up, 45-44, with 18:08 to play. With the Broncs leading, 53-52, Hofstra went on an 8-0 run behind a dunk from Wright-Foreman and a pair of three-pointers from Coburn to take a 60-53 lead with 13:37 to play. That would be the last Hofstra basket for more than three minutes as Rider's 8-0 run gave the Broncs a 61-60 lead with 10:15 to play in Stevie Jordan's fast break layup. Wright-Foreman's jumper in the paint gave Hofstra the lead back, 62-61, with 9:53 to go and Buie extended the lead to 64-61 with a pair of free throws with 8:54 on the clock. Hofstra would extend the lead to five points on two occasions and took its largest lead of the game up to that point, 78-70, on Wright-Foreman's long three-pointer with 4:08 to play. Rider would get within five, 78-73, but the Pride scored 11 unanswered points to close the game and take the 16-point victory.
Jordan had a team-high 17 points to lead Rider while Dimencio Vaughn tallied 16 points and a team-best five rebounds.
Hofstra returns to action Monday night at Manhattan. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
