Riverdale, NY - Junior
Tareq Coburn had a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double and the Hofstra Men's Basketball team placed four players in double figures en route to an 80-50 rout of Manhattan on Monday evening at Draddy Gymnasium.
Joining Coburn in double figures was senior
Desure Buie with 18, senior
Justin Wright-Foreman with 14 and sophomore
Jalen Ray with 13. It marked the first game this season that Wright-Foreman didn't lead Hofstra in scoring or score at least 20 points. He took just eight shots in the contest.
Hofstra improves to 8-3 with its fifth straight victory. It is the program's first win streak of at least five games since an eight-game win streak from February 11, 2016-March 6, 2016. Manhattan falls to 2-7 with the loss.
Hofstra scored eight of the 10 points in the contest, including a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman with 15:40 on the clock, to take the early 8-2 lead on the Jaspers. The Pride would use an 8-0 scoring run to push the lead to 16, 26-10, with 7:33 left before the half as Coburn had four points during the quick spurt. After Manhattan slowly closed the gap to under double digits with less than a minute to play in the opening stanza, a layup from Buie in the closing seconds of the half gave the Pride back a double-digit advantage.
The Pride scored the first seven points of the second stanza to push the lead to 42-24 following a three-pointer from Coburn with 18:16 left in regulation. A 12-0 Hofstra run would give the Pride a commanding 56-28 lead with 12 minutes to play as Ray contributed five points during the big run. Hofstra would cruise from there as they went on to pick up their eighth triumph of the season.
Buie added a game-high six assists and five rebounds, while junior
Eli Pemberton added five assists.
Warren Williams posted 10 points and seven rebounds for Manhattan, while Ebube Ebube added 10 points as well.
Hofstra will have a long layoff for final exams and return to action on Wednesday, December 19 when it travels to Long Island rival Stony Brook for a 7 p.m. contest.
