Hempstead, NY – Senior
Justin Wright-Foreman recorded 34 points to lead five Pride players in double-figures as Hofstra posted its ninth consecutive victory with an 89-75 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Drexel Dragons at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday evening. The overall win streak is the seventh-longest in program history and the longest since a nine-game streak to start the 2004-05 season.
The Pride, who improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAA, also extended their home winning streak to 12 games. Drexel, which dropped its fourth consecutive contest, is now 6-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Hofstra also won its 12th straight home game dating back to last season.
In addition to Wright-Foreman, who posted his fourth 30-point game of the season and the 15th of his career to go with five rebounds and five assists, Hofstra received 15 points and a game-high 10 assists from senior
Desure Buie, 13 points from junior
Eli Pemberton, 12 points and a game-high two blocks from graduate-student
Jacquil Taylor, and 11 points from junior
Tareq Coburn. The Pride shot 60% (35-58) from the field.
Drexel had four players in double-figures led by senior Troy Harper with 22 points and five rebounds, 15 points and five caroms from junior Alihan Demir, 12 points from graduate-student Trevor John and 10 points from freshman Camren Wynter. Drexel shot 46% (27-59) from the field including 55% (17-31) in the second half.
In a fast-paced first half, the Pride came out shooting and hitting to build a 47-27 lead at the half. It was the three-point basket that gave Hofstra some distance from the Dragons in the period as the Pride hit 6-of 10 trey attempts in the first half. Hofstra led 6-4 after Drexel's James Butler's dunk at the 17:21 mark when the long-range bomb made its mark. The Pride hit four unanswered three-pointers by four different players to take an 18-4 lead after Buie's trey at the 14:25 mark.
After the Dragons closed to 20-9 on baskets by John and Wynter around a
Dan Dwyer jumper, the Pride went on a 14-4 run, behind 10 points from Wright-Foreman in the spurt, to boost their lead to 34-16 on
Tareq Coburn's dunk at the 8:38 mark. Drexel closed to within 14 twice in the final six minutes of the half, the latest at 38-24 with 2:38 remaining on Demir's lay-up. But the Pride outscored Drexel, 9-3 over the last 2:06 with Pemberton's lay-up with seven seconds remaining giving Hofstra their biggest lead of the contest at 47-27. The Pride shot 62% (18-29) in the first half while Drexel hit on just 36% (10-28) including just one of nine from the three-point line for the CAA's second-ranked long-range shooting team. Wright-Foreman had 16 first half points while Pemberton added nine.
In the second half, the Hofstra advantage moved to 24 at 61-37 after a Wright-Foreman jumper at the 16:07 mark before the Dragons made their run. Drexel went on a 27-9 run over the next 7:23 to close to within six at 70-64 on Washington's three-pointer with 8:40 to play. After Pemberton's lay-up for the Pride and Demir's free throw for Drexel moved the score to 72-65 at the 8:05 mark, the Pride returned to their earlier form and the Dragons went cold.
Hofstra went on a 13-2 run over the next 4:14 while Drexel hit on just one of nine field goal attempts as the Pride built an 85-67 lead with 2:46 to play after Taylor's lay-up. Hofstra kept the Dragons at bay in the final two minutes to post the 89-75 victory.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, January 5 when the Pride host the Huskies of Northeastern in a CAA contest at the Mack Sports Complex.
