Eli Pemberton each added 18 points to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a 79-61 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Friday evening at a sold out David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. A crowd of 4,645 was in attendance for the exciting Hofstra Basketball doubleheader.
Hofstra trailed, 16-1, early in the contest before rallying for the dominating victory. The Pride improved to 1-0 this season, while Mount St. Mary's falls to 0-2 with the loss. The comeback was the largest for Hofstra since the Pride rallied from an 18-point deficit at UNCW on February 25, 2016. Hofstra won that game, 70-69.
Buie tied Wright-Foreman for team-high honors with five assists, while graduate
Jacquil Taylor posted a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points. The Pride got a solid outing from junior
Stafford Trueheart, who chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.
Hofstra recovered after trailing 16-1 almost eight minutes into the game as a jumper from sophomore
Tareq Coburn kick-started a 13-4 run that closed the gap to 20-14 with 6:35 left in the opening stanza. Trailing by nine, 27-18, with 3:32 left in the first half, Hofstra closed the half on a 13-1 run to take its first lead of the game at 31-28 at the break. A Buie three-pointer knotted the score at 28 and sophomore
Jalen Ray put the Pride in front for good with 17 ticks left on the clock.
The lead would balloon to 11 early in the second half as Wright-Foreman drained a three-pointer with 15:13 on the clock to make it 46-35. The lead grew to as many as 20, 69-49, with 6:48 left on a pair of free throws from Buie before the Pride settled in for the 18-point win.
Jalen Gibbs led Mount St. Mary's with 21 points, while K.J. Scott added 14.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Marshall for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 5-4 all-time against Mount St. Mary's. It was the first meeting since the 1962-63 season.
- Today's comeback marked the first time Hofstra has trailed in a game by double figures and eventually won by double figures since defeating Canisius, 96-85, on November 13, 2015. Hofstra trailed in that contest by 18 points.
