STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Hofstra University Women's Basketball team suffered a tough defeat against the Stony Brook Seawolves in the first road test of the season, 77-49 at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Tuesday evening.
Two Hofstra players finished in double figure scoring, led by senior
Boogie Brozoski who reached double digits in the third-straight game with 11 points and a team-high five assists. Behind Brozoski was junior
Ana Hernandez Gil who netted 10 points for the first time this season. Finally,
Vanerlie Valcourt played solid off the bench, scoring seven points in just ten minutes played. Junior
Marianne Kalin finished as the top rebounder for the Pride with six boards.
The Seawolves shot a blistering 50 percent in the first quarter during its home opener, outscoring the Pride, 29-11 in the first ten minutes of action. Stony Brook increased the lead to as many as 31 by the end of the third period, before an 8-0 run by Hofstra closed the gap to 23 points. During the stretch, Valcourt pieced together an and-one layup, Brozoski hit a three-pointer and Hernandez Gil drove in with a layup. Despite the Pride outshooting the Seawolves, 19-16 in the final frame, Hofstra was never able to find the groove and catch up.
The Pride will continue its road swing on Saturday, November 17 for a date with St. Bonaventure. Tip off from the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y. is slated for 2:00 pm.
