VB: Hofstra Makes Statement In CAA With Win Over JMU

Hempstead, NY - Senior Doris Bogoje had a Colonial Athletic Association individual season-high 12 blocks, while junior Laura Masciullo led the way with 13 kills to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a dominating four-set win over James Madison on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Freshman Maddie Appleton posted a match-high 26 digs to assist in the winning effort.

With the win, Hofstra hands James Madison its first CAA loss of the season as the Pride won convincingly after dropping the opening stanza. Hofstra improved to 17-7 overall and 7-3 in conference action with the win. James Madison falls to 17-4 and 9-1 in the league with the loss. This match concluded the regular season series with the Dukes as Hofstra won today in four and dropped a narrow five-set decision in Harrisonburg on September 22. Set scores were 20-25, 25-22, 28-26 and 25-13 for Hofstra.

After JMU won the first set, Hofstra would even the contest as Masciullo posted four kills in the second set to pace the Pride, while Appleton had seven digs in the set to knot the score. It would be Hofstra's defense that would be the difference in the match as the Pride outblocked the Dukes, 20 to 9, including 14.5 to 3 in the last two sets combined. The third set went back and forth with each team having multiple set points before the Pride finally took the lead in the contest. The final set was no match as Hofstra held James Madison to a negative .120 attack percentage in completing the convincing win.

Freshman Aisha Skinner had 10 kills, seven digs and seven blocks, while senior Nanisha Perez added 12 digs, nine kills and three blocks. Senior Michela Rucli posted nine kills and six blocks and junior Luisa Sydlik notched 42 assists, 13 digs and five blocks for the Pride. Briley Brind'Amour had 10 kills for James Madison, while Sarah Martin posted 32 assists, 11 digs and seven kills.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, October 26, when the Pride travels to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. match.

NOTES
- Hofstra is now 25-16 all-time against James Madison. The Pride ended a four-match losing skid against the Dukes in the series, as each of the last three meetings prior to today had gone to five sets.
- Bogoje's 12 blocks are just the fourth time in 2018 a player in the CAA has reached double figures in blocks. She takes over the CAA season-high from teammate Rucli, who had 11 blocks at San Francisco on September 7, 2018. It was also a career-high for Bogoje, who previously tallied eight blocks versus LIU Brooklyn on September 1, 2017.
- Masciullo moved into ninth place all-time in kills at Hofstra with 1,161. She passed Elizabeth Curley, who had 1,160 from 2003-06.
