WBB: Hofstra Springs Past UNCW

Wilmington, N.C. – Junior Boogie Brozoski posted a career-high 18 points, all in the second half, and senior Ashunae Durant posted 17 points as the Hofstra Women's Basketball team got past UNCW, 69-61, on Sunday afternoon at Trask Coliseum for the Pride's second straight Colonial Athletic Association victory.
 
Hofstra (8-7, 2-2 CAA) overcame a double-digit first quarter deficit for the second straight game, as senior Aleana Leon rounded out the Pride's double-figure scorers with 10 points.
 
UNCW (7-8, 0-4 CAA) also finished with three players in double digits, led by Lacey Suggs' 18 points, while Jenny DeGraaf chipped in 12 and Timber Tate added 10. Rebekah Banks led on the glass with 11 rebounds.      
 
The Seahawks' scored the first nine points of the contest before sophomore E'Lexus Davis drove inside to get the Pride on the board. UNCW continued to push its lead, however, ending the quarter with an 18-8 advantage.
 
Facing a double-digit deficit to start the second quarter for the second straight game, the Pride sprang to life once again, with Davis scoring the first points of the frame again. Durant then sparked a 12-0 run to give Hofstra its first lead of the game, 22-20, midway through the quarter. The Seahawks answered with a 9-2 run of their own to regain the advantage. Durant scored the Pride's final five points of the quarter, leaving the score at 31-29 in favor of UNCW at the half.
 
After Brozoski opened the scoring in the third quarter, DeGraaf knocked down a three-pointer to give the Seahawks a 34-31 lead. The teams traded baskets until senior Olivia Askin's first trey of the day knotted the score at 36. A jumper from Leon gave the Pride a 47-41 lead, before a three from Brozoski pushed the advantage back to six at 52-46. Five straight points from Suggs brought the Seahawks within one, 52-51, at the end of the frame.
 
Hofstra scored the first four of the fourth before Askin hit another three to bring the lead to six once again. A jumper from sophomore Marianne Kalin put the lead at eight, 63-55, and the Pride held on, with Brozoski knocking down four free throws late to seal the win.
 
Hofstra returns for a four-game homestand, beginning with a matchup with Delaware at 7 p.m. on Friday at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
 
Notes:
-Brozoski has scored in double figures in back-to-back games, while Leon has achieved the feat in three straight contests.
-Durant's double-digit performance was her eighth of the season.
-The Pride shot 43.5 percent from the field, while the Seahawks were 34.5 percent from the floor.
-Hofstra pushed its advantage in the all-time series against UNCW to 19-14.
