MBB: Career Night For Wright-Foreman Not Enough In Hofstra Loss

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra junior Justin Wright-Foreman scored a game and career-high 39 points, including the 1,000th of his career, but Elon rode a hot-shooting afternoon to an 89-76 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Phoenix shot 51-percent from the field (31-61) and had tied the building record (for an opponent) with 13 three-pointers.

Hofstra saw its modest two-game win streak snapped and fell to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the CAA. Elon, which connected on 13-27 (48-percent) three-pointers, improved to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in league action.

In addition to Wright-Foreman, sophomore Eli Pemberton added 19 points. Senior Rokas Gustys had a season-high 23 rebounds, tying his own Mack Sports Complex record, to go along with eight points. Wright-Foreman, who matched his career-high with six assists, went over the 30-point plateau for the fourth time this season and eighth time in his stellar career. Gustys posted his ninth 20-rebound game in the contest.

Elon jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening three minutes before Pemberton quelled the run with a three-pointer. Wright-Foreman followed with a jumper in the paint to make it a 9-5 game before Dainan Swoope answered for Elon with a three-pointer to give the Phoenix a 12-5 lead with 16:09 to go in the half. The Pride would then outscore Elon 10-3 over the next 5:30 to tie the score at 15 on Jalen Ray's three-pointer with 10:48 to go. The Phoenix took a 23-17 lead before the Pride rallied to tie the game at 23 on a Gustys jumper with 5:07 on the clock. Gustys would give the Pride their first lead, 27-26, with a layup with 3:45 remaining in the opening stanza. The teams would trade the lead five times the rest of the way with Elon taking a 36-33 lead at the break on a last second three-pointer from Dmitri Thompson.

The Phoenix started the second half the same way as the first and took a 46-37 lead 2:36 into the period. Brian Dawkins scored eight of Elon's 10 points in the opening minutes of the half. The lead grew to 14, 64-50, on a pair of free throws by Thompson with 11:48 to play. Wright-Foreman would score six straight points to get Hofstra within eight, 64-56, with 11:06 on the clock but Elon answered with a 8-0 run to go up by 16, 72-56, with 9:46 to play. The lead grew to as many as 24 on a pair of occasions, the last at 86-62 with 6:03 to play. The Pride would not get closer than the final score.

Tyler Seibring led five Elon players in double-figures with 22 points. Dawkins and Thompson each had 18 points, while Swoope and Steven Santa Ana chipped in with 10 points each. Dawkins had eight rebounds to pace the Phoenix.

Hofstra returns to action Thursday night, January 11, when it travels to Towson for a 7 p.m. tip against the Tigers.
