Justin Wright-Foreman scored eight of his team-high 26 points in the overtime period to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to an 87-81 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Dukes of James Madison at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday night.
The Pride, who posted their second consecutive victory, improved to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in the CAA. James Madison, which dropped its fourth consecutive contest, falls to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Wright-Foreman, who hit a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the contest at 72-72, was 7-for-16 from the field and 9-for-11 from the charity stripe for his 15th game in double-figure scoring. Hofstra freshman
Jalen Ray added a career-high 18 points and senior
Rokas Gustys recorded his seventh double-double of the season and 41st of his career with 12 points and a season-high 18 rebounds.
James Madison was led by junior guard Stuckey Mosely with a season-high 37 points and was 9-for-16 from the three-point line. Freshman Matt Lewis added 14 points, junior Develle Phillips contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Darius Banks chipped in with 10 points.
After a see-saw 40 minutes of regulation, Phillips opened the overtime period with two free throws to give the Dukes a 74-72 lead. Hofstra responded with a three-pointer by Ray and a lay-up by Wright-Foreman to give the Pride a 77-74 with 2:55 to play. Phillips answered with a short jumper in the lane 26 seconds later and then hit one of two free throws at the 2:04 mark to tie the game at 77-all.
Hofstra sophomore
Eli Pemberton (9 points) and Wright-Foreman then each hit two free throws to give the Pride an 81-77 lead with 1:00 to play in the overtime. Lewis closed the JMU gap to 81-78 by hitting one of two from the charity stripe before Wright-Foreman hit a jumper with 24 seconds remaining and sophomore Stafford Truehart sank two free throws with 0:15 left to give Hofstra an 85-78 advantage. Wright-Foreman closed out the contest with two more free throws after Mosely hit his ninth three-pointer of the game, to post the final 87-81 score.
In a contest that featured 11 lead changes and eight tied scores, the Pride held a 33-32 lead after a first half peppered with scoring spurts. The second half was very similar with JMU making a 13-2 run early in the second stanza and the Pride responding with 10-2 and 8-1 runs to stay close. The game was tied at 66-all with 3:33 to play. Ray hit a free throw 30 seconds later for the Pride before Mosely hit a floater in the lane and Phillips sank two free throws for JMU to give the Dukes a 70-67 lead with 2:15 remaining in regulation.
Gustys, who tallied his 1,000th career point earlier in the second half, sank two free throws with 1:52 to play before Mosely sank a three-point bomb for JMU with 5.8 seconds to play. After a half-court in-bound pass by
Matija Radovic to Gustys and a timeout with 4.3 seconds left, Wright-Foreman hit a three-pointer in front of the Pride bench to send the game into overtime.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, January 7 when the Pride host the Phoenix of Elon in a CAA battle at the Mack Sports Complex at 4 p.m.
Notes
- Friday's game was the 29th meeting between Hofstra and JMU. The Pride now holds a 17-12 lead in the series.
- Gustys grabbed his ninth rebound of the game at the 16:21 mark of the second half to move into third place on the CAA career rebounding chart, passing Old Dominion's Odell Hodge (1,086). He now has 1.096 rebounds in his career.
- Gustys became the 35th player in school history to tally 1,000 points in his career at the 7:10 mark of the second half.
- Wright-Foreman, who reached double figures for the 37th straight game, now has 991 career points in his Hofstra career.
