WBB: Shorthanded Hofstra Falls At James Madison

Harrisonburg, VA - Mikiyah Croskey, who made her first career start, scored a personal-best 18 points and grabbed  a season-high six rebounds, but a shorthanded Hofstra team fell to Colonial Athletic Association-leading James Madison, 73-56, Friday night at the JMU Convocation Center. Hofstra played without starting senior Ashunae Durant and then lost senior Aleana Leon to an injury three minutes into the game.

Hofstra fell to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the CAA with its second straight loss. James Madison, which won for the ninth consecutive time, improved to 12-7 overall and 8-0 in league play.

Croskey, a sophomore in her first season, was 8-9 from the floor in her first start. Boogie Brozoski joined Croskey in double figures with 10 points and also added eight assists.   

Hofstra trailed, 22-16, after a high-scoring first half. The Pride got a strong effort out of the gate from Croskey, who scored eight points on 4-4 shooting in the opening stanza. The Dukes would go up by 10, 28-18, with 8:11 to go in the second quarter on a three-point play from Logan Reynolds. But Hofstra responded with an 8-0 run with three pointers from Brozoski and Olivia Askin, and a basket from Marianne Kalin to get within two, 28-26, with 5:03 to play. James Madison would close the half on a 9-2 spurt to take a 37-28 lead into halftime.

James Madison pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Pride 17-8 to open up a 54-36 lead following 30 minutes of play. Kamiah Smalls had six points in the period as the Dukes led by as many as 20, 54-34, with 1:43 to go. The lead grew to 25, 62-37, with 6:34 to go in the fourth quarter before the Pride closed the game on a 19-11 spurt to account for the final margin.

Smalls had 16 points to pace the Dukes, while Lexie Barrier added 12 points. Kayla Cooper Williams posted 10 points and nine rebounds.

Hofstra will conclude its two-game road trip Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at William & Mary.

Notes:
-Hofstra fell to 9-23 all-time versus James Madison and has lost seven straight games in the series.
-JMU's 73 points was the most allowed by the Pride in a conference game this season.
-Croskey's previous highs were six points and four rebounds.
-Kalin had a team-high seven rebounds.
