WBB: Second-Half Comeback Comes Up Short As Hofstra Falls To Drexel

Hempstead, NY – Senior Aleana Leon scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Pride, but the Hofstra Women's Basketball team fell to Drexel, 58-47, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which dropped just its second loss in the last six outings, slipped to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in the CAA. Drexel, which won its fourth consecutive contest, improves to 14-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Sophomore Bailey Greenberg scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and senior Sara Woods added 13 points and five caroms to lead the Dragons.

The Pride came out cold in the first quarter, connecting on just one of 13 field goal attempts as the Dragons built a 15-3 after the first period. Olivia Askin's three-pointer with 4:30 to play was the only points that Hofstra could muster in the first 10 minutes.

Drexel opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to give the Dragons their biggest lead of the half at 24-5 with 6:20 to play. But the Pride, behind five points from Leon on a jumper and a three-pointer in the final 3:37, closed to 26-12 by halftime. Greenberg had seven first half points for Drexel.

Hofstra climbed back into the contest in the third as Sandra Karsten tallied five points in the period as the Pride outscored Drexel, 14-10 to close to within 10 at 36-26 after three quarters. Hofstra came out in the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run over the first 2:24 to close to within three at 38-35 on a Boogie Brozoski layup. But the Dragons scored the next five points as part of an 11-3 spurt that gave Drexel some breathing room at 49-38 after a Woods three-point play with 2:57 to play. The Pride never threatened after that as Drexel posted their second win of the season over the Pride, 58-47.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, January 26 when the Pride travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia to meet the Dukes of James Madison University. Game time is 7 p.m.
