WBB: Hofstra Cruises Past William & Mary

Hempstead, NY – Senior Aleana Leon scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Pride players in double-figures as Hofstra defeated William and Mary, 65-54, before 2,262 fans at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for Health and Fitness Education Day on Friday morning.

Hofstra, which recorded its fourth win in the last five outings, improved to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. William & Mary, which dropped its third contest in the last four outings, slipped to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Leon hit eight-of-18 shots from the field and was two-for-two from the line for her game high points. Senior Ashunae Durant recorded her sixth double-double of the season and third straight, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Boogie Brozoski added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists while sophomore Marianne Kalin chipped in with 11 points and eight caroms.

William & Mary was led by junior Bianca Boggs and sophomore Victoria Reynolds with 15 points each. Reynold also grabbed seven rebounds as did senior Abby Rendle for the Tribe.

Hofstra jumped out to a 10-3 lead after 3:37 behind six points from Leon. But the Tribe went on their own 12-4 spurt behind five points from senior Jenna Green to take a 15-14 lead on a Boggs lay-up with 1:18 to play in the quarter. Durant gave the Pride a 16-15 lead after one quarter on a lay-up with seven seconds remaining.

In the second quarter, the Pride equaled their biggest lead of the half twice at 28-21 and 32-25 on a Leon jumper with 41 seconds to play in the half before Boggs ended the half with a lay-up to bring the Tribe closer at 32-27 at the break. Leon had 14 points in the first 20 minutes while Brozoski had eight of her 10 first-half points in the second quarter. Reynolds led the Tribe with nine points.

The Pride opened the second half with a 12-4 run to boost the score to 44-31 with 5:05 to play following a Durant lay-up. William and Mary quickly scored the next five points to close to within eight at 44-36. But Hofstra responded by outscoring the Tribe, 7-4 over the last 3:59 of the period to hold a 51-40 lead after three quarters. The Tribe opened the fourth quarter with three straight points to close to within eight at 51-43 but that would be as close as they would get as the Pride posted the 65-54 victory.
