WBB: Kilburn-Steveskey Gets 200th Win As Hofstra Downs Charleston

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra took control of the game with an 11-0 third quarter run and held off the College of Charleston, 65-60, Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win gave Hofstra Head Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey her 200th career victory.

Hofstra (9-8, 3-3 CAA) put three players in double figures, led by Olivia Askin's 15 points. The senior guard was a perfect 5-5 from three-point range and added a career-best four assists. Ashunae Durant had 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Aleana Leon chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. The Pride shot a stellar 53 percent from the field (25-47) in the win compared to 42 percent for Charleston (5-12, 1-5 CAA). The Cougars suffered their fourth consecutive loss.

Hofstra got off to a hot start, converting on 5 of its first six shots to build an 11-8 lead midway through the first quarter. Leon had four points in the early going, while Askin added three. Hofstra would settle for a one point advantage at the end of the opening stanza, 15-14. The Cougars opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 20-17 lead with 6:54 to play and force a Hofstra timeout.  The Pride would tie the score at 25 on a pair of Marianne Kalin free throws with 1:49 to play. Charleston scored the next four points before Durant converted a three-point play to close out the scoring with the Cougars leading 29-28 after 20 minutes of action.

The Pride used an 11-0 run late in the third quarter to turn a 39-37 deficit into a 48-39 lead with 2:16 to go in the period following a layup from Leon.  The Pride would outscore the Cougars, 26-14, in the quarter and led by a 54-43 count after back-to-back three's from Askin to end the stanza. Charleston would cut its deficit to six, 59-53, following a pair of free throws from Deja Ford with 3:52 to play. After Durant put Hofstra back up by eight, the Cougars scored five unanswered to get within three, 61-58, with 1:43 to play after Ford's jumper.  Both teams had a pair of empty possession before Kalin put the Pride up, 63-58, with a layup with 20 seconds to go. After a Charleston basket, Boogie Brozoski hit a pair of free throws to seal the win with eight seconds to play.  

Ford led all scorers with 19 points. Charleston also saw Shiclasia Brown (13) and Tanisha Brown (10) score in double figures. Tanisha Brown also added a team-high 10 rebounds.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 7-3 all-time versus Charleston and swept the season series from the Cougars.
-Askin shot a perfect 11-11 from three-point range against the Cougars this season after going 6-6 on the road on January 5.
-Coach Kilburn-Steveskey is already the program's all-time wins leader and saw her record improve to 200-164 in her 12th season at Hofstra.
-Durant picked up a double-double in both of Hofstra's games this weekend.
-Brozoski had eight points and nine assists, while Kalin finished with nine points.
