Williamsburg, VA – The Hofstra Field Hockey team opened their 2017 Colonial Athletic Association season at William and Mary Friday evening and the 19th-ranked Tribe handed the Pride their second consecutive shutout in a 5-0 decision at Busch Field.
Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive contest, slips to 5-7 on the season and 0-1 in the CAA. The Tribe of William and Mary improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Senior Emma MacLeod tallied four of the five goals for the Tribe.
Hofstra fell behind early in the contest as MacLeod scored the first of her four goals at the 2:59 mark from Cammie Lloyd. Lloyd boosted the lead at the 14:21 mark on a tip-in of a pass from Jenna Cutilli. The Tribe outshot the Pride, 11-6 in the first half with Hofstra senior goalie making five of her eight saves in the first 35 minutes before being lifted in the second half.
William and Mary and MacLeod added three more goals in the second half as the Pride replaced Swan with freshman
Cecelia DeSimone (5 saves) at the 44:26 mark with the score at 3-0. Tribe sophomore goalie Morgan Connor needed to make just a first half save on Pride freshman
Taylor Casamassa before being replaced at the 61:37 mark by Jessica Wiggins for the final 8:23.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, October 1 when the Pride entertain the Tigers of Towson University in another Colonial Athletic Association contest at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time for the Think Pink Day contest in recognition of the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month is noon.
