VB: Masciullo’s Career Night Not Enough In Hofstra Loss

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Laura Masciullo slammed down a match and career-high 27 kills for Hofstra, but Charleston rallied after dropping the first set to defeat the Pride in four sets on Friday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Set scores were 19-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-17 in favor of Charleston. The loss drops Hofstra's record to 8-7 and 0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Charleston improved to 12-3 and 1-0 in league action. The contest was the CAA lid-lifter for both squads.

The Pride looked good early on as they earned a six-point win in the opening stanza, holding the Cougars to a .081 attack percentage. Charleston would respond though and would take the next three sets to earn the win over the Pride in a match-up of the two top teams in the preseason CAA coaches poll.

Freshman Emma Price added 10 kills for the Pride, while sophomore Luisa Sydlik tallied 44 assists. Kennedy Madison had 12 kills, eight digs and four blocks for Charleston, while Allison Beckman posted 43 assists and 10 digs.

Hofstra is back on the court on Sunday when it hosts UNCW at 12:30 p.m. in the Mack Physical Education Center.

NOTES
- Charleston leads the all-time series with Hofstra 7-5.
- Masciullo's previous career-high of 25 kills came against UNCW on October 28, 2016. The 27 kills are an individual season-high for a member of the Pride as freshman Ivania Ortiz had 27 against Villanova on August 26.
- Price has now reached double figures in kills in three straight matches and eight times this season.
- The contest pitted two of the heavyweights of the CAA against each other as the two programs have accounted for three of the last five conference champions with Hofstra winning in 2012 and 2014 and Charleston winning in 2013.
