VB: Strong Offensive Explosion Leads Hofstra Past UNCW

Hempstead, NY – Led by 17 kills and 10 digs from sophomore Laura Masciullo, the Hofstra Volleyball team dispatched of UNCW on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Hofstra, which did not commit an attack error in either of the first two sets, ended up hitting at a stellar .413 clip for the match. It is their highest of the season and the second-highest of the season for a conference school.

The win improves Hofstra's record to 9-7 and 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while UNCW falls to 6-8 and 0-2 in league action. Set scores were 25-16, 25-10, 24-26 and 25-19 in favor of Hofstra.

Hofstra totaled 26 kills on 52 attempts for a .481 attack percentage in the first two sets as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match. The Seahawks would stem the tide for a moment with a win in the third stanza, but the Pride ended any thoughts of a UNCW comeback as they hit .500 in the fourth set to take the match and earn their first conference win of the season.

Freshman Ivania Ortiz posted 13 kills and 10 digs for Hofstra, which got an outstanding match from sophomore Luisa Sydlik with 52 assists, 11 digs, five kills and four blocks. Junior Michela Rucli added 11 kills and six blocks for the Pride. Maddy Kline led UNCW with 12 kills, while Michaela White had 27 assists and 13 digs for the Seahawks.

The Pride hit the road for its first CAA road trip of the season next week as Hofstra will face Towson on Friday at 8 p.m. before closing the week with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday against Delaware.
