FH: De Wolf Scores Twice To Lead Hofstra Past Rider

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Philine de Wolf scored twice and senior goalie Carys Swan made seven saves to lead the Hofstra Pride to their second consecutive victory with a 3-2 win over the Rider Broncs at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Pride improve to 5-5 on the season while Rider, which has dropped four of the last five games, falls to 3-4.

Hofstra scored twice in the first five minutes on defensive lapses by Rider. Just 42 seconds into the contest, junior Madison Sauve picked up a loose ball behind Rider goalie Lena Vandam for an easy tap-in on her seventh goal of the year. A little more than four minutes later, de Wolf carried the ball deep into the circle and sent a centering pass that was knocked into the goal by a Rider defender for a 2-0 lead.

Rider closed the gap to 2-1 just 36 seconds before halftime when Kaitlyn Flemming took a pass from Eline De Jong and beat Swan.

Hofstra added an important goal 7:18 into the second half as de Wolf took a pass from Sauve and scored into the lower corner for her seventh goal of the year. That goal turned out to be crucial as Rider's Alice Otterson tipped in a shot by Shannon Hughes at the 61:36 mark to close to 3-2.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, September 22 when the Pride host the 21st-ranked Hawks of Saint Joseph's University at 4 p.m.
