Doris Bogoje had 10 kills and four blocks to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a convincing three-set sweep of Binghamton on Friday night in action at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Sophomore
Hanna Russell added five kills and six blocks for Hofstra.
Hofstra won for the third straight time and for the sixth time in its last seven matches and improved to 7-5 on the season. Binghamton fell to 3-8 with the loss. In addition, it marked Hofstra's 14th straight home victory dating back to the 2015 season. Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16 in favor of the Pride.
The first set was the closest of the contest with the Pride narrowly earning a four-point victory before dominating the Bearcats in the second and third stanza. Sophomore
Luisa Sydlik tallied 36 assists and four digs in the match, while junior
Nanishka Perez chipped in with eight kills, four blocks, three digs and two service aces. Junior
Michela Rucli had six kills and seven blocks and junior
Caylie Denham picked up a team-high 10 digs. Gabby Alicea had 13 kills and three digs for Binghamton.
Hofstra is back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Pride will host Bryant at 10.a.m. and then close tournament play with a 7 p.m. match against Syracuse. In tonight's first match at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational, Bryant rallied from a two sets to none deficit to defeat Syracuse in five sets.
NOTES
- Hofstra is 2-2 all-time against Binghamton. The teams last meet in 2009 prior to tonight's match.
- Hofstra is remarkably 108-32 (77%) all-time against teams from the state of New York. Including tonight's win the Pride is 3-0 against teams from New York State this season (Binghamton, LIU Brooklyn and Stony Brook).
- Hofstra's three straight wins have all come in sweeps. It is the longest win streak, with all victories coming in straight sets, since September 3-13, 2014, when the Pride won six straight matches in sweeps.
- Tonight was Bogoje's second match this season with double figures in kills. She had 14 versus LIU Brooklyn on September 1.
